Pedagogy for Diversity: A Pursuit of Inclusivity

Inclusion is an ideology calling for the active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in Communities (intellectual, social, cultural, geographical) with which individuals might connect in ways that increase awareness, content knowledge, cognitive sophistication, and empathetic understanding of the complex ways individuals interact within systems and institutions (Albertine, 2011). The focus of the ideology is the “individual’ transformation. The term pedagogy indicates the process of facilitating learning by taking into consideration the theories of learning and the needs and interest of individual students. Thus, pedagogy by its meaning itself is sensitive to the ‘learner’ and is concerned with the process of learning. In this process of learning, what is being learnt, who is learning, and the environment created for this process are the fundamental features to be explored. Thus knowledge, learner and teacher emerge in the forefront of any discussion on pedagogy.
