Stages and Skills of Counseling
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Introduction:
Children of today are under more stress than children in earlier times. As a direct consequence of this, parents and teachers of these stressed children also undergo additional stress. If we start listing the reasons for this, it goes on. While it is beyond the scope of this narrative to address these reasons, it is crucial that those who deal with these children are equipped with necessary competencies to cope with the changing times with its unique challenges. As mentioned in the Serenity prayer, we have to accept the things we cannot change while making conscious effort to change whatever we can to help everyone involved to cope with the situation. It is towards this end, probably this interaction was felt through which counseling services are made available to our younger generation looking towards a support in finding their lost way. In the present context parents and teachers too are looking for avenues to learn to handle situations their children are in. This module is an attempt to provide certain input into the essential skills of different stages, and their significance in counseling to address the needs of children, parents and teachers.
The newspaper nowadays are full of stories of children committing suicides due to poor academic performance and depression. Often we find juvenile involvement in criminal acts, we find examples of traumatized children due to pressure for performance and lack of identity. Parents and teachers are clueless as to how to handle their innocent yet rebellious teens. Teachers are getting de-motivated due to disinterest, indiscipline, and disrespect by students in class. School managements are struggling with teacher attrition and human resource crunch besides media assault to deal effectively with school running. Students are stressed out due to academic pressure as also changed lifestyles due to private tuitions, stresses of urban life and cut throat competition. Hence those involved in making education as an effective tool for personal and societal development are under stress for different reasons. Amidst all this chaos, “The destiny of India is being shaped in her class rooms” the strong and true statement still echo in all possible stages talking of school and education. To make this a reality in practice, guidance and counseling services are the need of the hour.
